Mexico has an entire emotional vocabulary for giving up gracefully ("ni modo"), for total indifference ("me vale madre"), and for the moment something breaks past saving ("ya valió madre"). This is where the national shrug lives. Some are clean; the "madre" and "chingada" ones are friends-only.
